A remake of 'The Phantom of the Opera' came out in 2004, but when is the original from?

Explanation

The original 'The Phantom of the Opera' is from 1925 and has been the basis for several remakes. The famous actor Lon Chaney played the lead in the original cast. He was so dedicated to his role and the film in general that he took over the director's chair for several scenes and put egg whites in his eyes to make them look more distant.
