Cape Verde is an independent republic and island group in the Atlantic Ocean. It is located around 500 km off the west coast of Africa. The country has around 600,000 inhabitants and covers an area of 4.033 km2. The islands were discovered and colonised by Portugal and gained independence in 1975. The name means 'the green cape'. The largst city and capital is Praia on the island São Tiago. The official language on the islands is Portuguese.
