George Washington (1732-1799) was the first president of the USA and was unanimously chosen to take on the role, the only American president to date to have won 100% of the votes. He took the Oath of Office at a ceremony in Federal Hall in New York City. Washington was very influential in the shaping of the new republic, and had both a state and the nation's capital named after him - one of two capitals in the world named after a US President, the other one being Monrovia in Liberia.
