The European Union or the EU is a political and economic union. Since 2007, the EU has been made up by 27 member states. The idea of the EU was originally conceived just after WW2 to avoid another debilitating war in Europe. The EU has around 500 million inhabitants and a total GDP of 12 billion euro (2007), making it the biggest economic and political power in the world.
