Cambodia is a kingdom in South East Asia. It is bordered by Thailand, Laos and Vietnam. The capital is called Phnom Penh. The country has some 14 million inhabitants and covers an area of 181,040 km². Cambodia gained independence from France in 1953, and the country has a history marked by internal and external conflicts. Today, the country is still marked by the civil war in the 1970s when Pol Pot gained power and killed almost 1/4 of the population.
