Barbados is an island nation in the Lesser Antilles in the Caribbean Sea. The country has around 300,000 inhabitants and covers an area of 430 km². The capital is called Bridgetown. The island was not inhabited when the first British settlers arrived in 1627. They planted sugar canes and staffed their plantations with slaves until slavery was abolished in 1843. Barbados was a British colony until it gained independence in 1966.
