Explanation
A peninsula is a land mass which is surrounded by water on three out of four sides. Examples of peninsulas are the Arabian Peninsula, the Balkans, the Iberian Peninsula and the Sinai Peninsula. A spit is the name for a pointed peninsula on the coast. During the Great Ice Age, the UK was a peninsula. The English Channel did not yet exist at the time, so the area was connected to Europe by France.
